Boulevard eucalyptus
Did you know that in the central part of the boulevard, in front of the Intourist hotel, there is the oldest eucalyptus tree in the garden? One of the tallest trees on this site was planted by Michael D Alfons himself. The development of Batumi Boulevard began in 1881-1884 with the planting of this tree and the arrangement of the magnolias alley next to it.
Eucalyptus is an evergreen, flowering, tree-shrub, a member of the Myrtaceae family, which includes about 600 species. It grows up to 160 meters high. Eucalyptus is widespread in Australia, as well as in the subtropical zone of the Black Sea coast. Since the 80s of the 19th century, about a hundred species of eucalyptus have been cultivated in Georgia as a decorative plant. It has a wide range of uses, its wood being used in shipbuilding, furniture making and many other domestic uses, but the most important use is in medicine. Its healing properties were discovered by the Australian Aborigines.
Ancient eucalyptus trees planted by D Alfons in the 30s of the last century.still grow in the boulevard area. It is the unique healing properties of eucalyptus that are associated with the defeat of malaria in the Black Sea region, in particular in Adjara. It is even called the tree of life. 52 eucalyptus trees grow on the territory of the boulevard.
